Adkins stops Lancers
SPENCERVILLE - Lincolnview scored off of the opening kickoff
but would find themselves unable to do so for the rest of the game thanks to a
brilliant performance in goal by Spencerville goal keeper Dominic Adkins on the
way to a 3-1 Bearcat victory.
With only :41 seconds gone in the fifth all-time meeting between
the two schools on the pitch, Lincolnview senior Clayton Leeth sliced his way
through the Spencerville defense and fired a ball past Adkins to put the
visitors on top 1-0.
Spencerville responded at 36:16 on a lead to sophomore
forward Will Gallaspie to tie up the contest that triggered an eruption of
applause from the Bearcat fans at Memorial Field on Tuesday evening.
Nearly eight minutes after his first goal tied things up,
Gallaspie struck again this time as he redirected a shot from teammate Joel Van
Gorder past Lancer keeper Davis Schwartz for a lead the Bearcats would never lose.
“We fought a much more experienced Lincolnview team tonight.
I am immensely proud of our effort tonight, our leaders stepped up and our younger
players provided energy at key moments” said Spencerville head coach Josh Van
Gorder after the win.
Trailing 2-1 to open the second half the Lancers turned up
the pressure on the Bearcats but were unable to slow down the youthful legs of
the hosts and surrendered a goal to Joel Van Gorder at 24:46 left in the second
half for the final tally of the evening.
Perhaps the biggest challenge of the evening for Dominic
Adkins in goal came in the second half as he was tasked with stopping a straight
on kick from Leeth that sailed through the goal posts and again as he
redirected a pair of Lancer attacks just moments later to keep his team in
front.
“Dom stepped up big time. We had a defensive blunder early
that led to their goal but he became more vocal and commanded his box and made
at least three huge saves” spoke Van Gorder of his keeper.
Though the goal scorers receive a lions share of the credit,
Van Gorder was quick to point out that freshman defender Tyler Kaverman also
had a big night “Tyler Kaverman stepped up for this team. He shut down Lincolnview’s
biggest offensive threat and allowed our offense to counter. Without his effort
we don’t take control, especially in the second half.”
Lincolnview falls to 1-2-3 on the season and will travel to
Kalida to take on the Wildcats on Thursday evening while Spencerville improves
to 2-1-1 and host WOSL rival New Knoxville at 7 P.M. at Memorial Field.
