Pirates blast Bearcats

SPENCERVILLE - Held scoreless through their first two games of the season the Bluffton Pirates blasted five goals past host Spencerville on Monday night as they opened up NWC play with a 5-1 victory over the Bearcats.

Reagan Mittendorf opened the scoring for Bluffton with 30:27 remaining in the first half as she utilized a lead pass to bounce a ball past Spencerville keeper Sydney LeMar to give her team a 1-0 advantage.

Spencerville pulled to even at 1-1 with 24:20 to go before halftime as Arianna McMichael zipped a goal off of a bounce from a teammates header past Bluffton's Julia Mehaffie for her first goal of the season.

After a Bearcat defender found herself called for a handball in the box, Mittendorf ripped a shot bottom left on the ensuing penalty kick for a score to give Bluffton back a one goal lead with 11:58 to go before the break.

Heading into the halftime break the Pirates outshot the Bearcats 16-1 as well as notching 10 shots on goal to the hosts one as they amassed a 2-1 advantage.

Nearly ten minutes into the second half Mittendorf launched a rocket from seven yards in front of the goal for her third goal of the ballgame to push the lead to 3-1 with 31:48 remaining off of an assist by Laykin Garmatter.

Scoring goals was not all Mittendorf was responsible for on the evening as she passed out an assist on her teams next goal coming at 29:59 to go that led teammate Allison Diller's connection in the bottom right corner past a diving LeMar for a three-goal lead at 4-1.

While the Bearcats were unable to cross midfield deep into Pirate territory in the second half without a host of defenders running step for step, Bluffton themselves enjoyed a big advantage in time of possession and used it to set up their last score.

Following a teammates shot that was turned away by LeMar, Diller scored her second goal of the game with 22:48 left off of a rebound and a blast for the final marker of the contest.

Bluffton improves to 1-2 on the season and will host Van Buren on Thursday night while Spencerville loses their first of the season and will put their 1-1 record on the line on Saturday afternoon at WOSL rival Coldwater.
